Australians who have gotten much love from all over in the last couple of years for their sincere, mid-tempo pop post-punk/ 77 pop punk, EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING deserve all the praise they’ve received and probably more. Singer(often speaker) Brian Suppression brings an unmistakable delivery to the fray as notions of early WIRE flow through this band’s tunes. The WET CEMENT 7″ was released on MEXICAN SUMMER in 2010. “Through The Trees” from this record is what these guys are all about. Simple rhythms, simple lyrics, the melody dancing about. I can fully imagine pogoing going on in abundance. RUSH TO RELAX, the band’s 3rd full length was released by Goner Records, also in 2010. The understated songwriting, and punk energy present in their earlier efforts is again present here, and has solidified into the highest quality pre-indie rock style punk pop to be found anywhere. “Tuning Out” is perfect power pop angst rife with the dopest little guitar leads just waiting in the wings to see the song into full blossom. And this comes as the song’s refrain gives way to an extended guitar wandering and feedback drift that never goes stale despite going on for minutes. Of course the refrain returns and all ends happily. “Gentleman” is a near perfect pop song. Start with rock solid beats, an elegant and beautifil guitar riff. Add hopeful, earnest lyrics of an incredibly fresh nature(especially considering that they were composed amid today’s snark and indifference) and you have, really, an instant classic. This whole album really sends you away with that feeling. Let’s hope they have new music coming soon.
