Colin from USAISAMONSTER comes to us here with a solo record.
This one is self released I believe, but he soon has another record coming
out under this moniker on Northern Spy Records. This record is full
of lyrical nods to a state of mind that I think a lot
of us can relate to. Looking for relief from this
human state, full of failures. Life not being what you
might have thought it was going to be. And even though it’s
not that bad, feeling shitty about it, but all the while
knowing and being aware that shit’s not that bad and there’s not
really much to complain about considering the grand scheme, and that life is actually good. Real shit. Love it. And of course there’s also some healthy societal skepticism carrying over from USAISAMONSTER.
There’s majestic guitar playing all over this record, very melodic and playful, winding all about the vocal melodies, helixes being creating and destroyed over and over.
Two of my favorites here are
: “Socialite”, track 6, is a gorgeous droning post-gospel number replete with churning riffage and wandering neil youngisms on guitar and just wonderful falsetto from Colin and call and reponse with the rest of the band.
AND
“Surrounded By Love”, track 7, a country shuffle w/ electronic bleepage and all throughout and wonderful vocal tweakage @ the finish.
Top notch tunes from a very exciting music maker out of New York City.
