BLANK REALM have been slowly crawling forth from their strange, acid drenched, improv noise experiments, crawling toward a more pop environment where the creatures move about via hooks and melody. This co-ed Brisbane band has put out a couple of LPs and several other releases on labels like NOT NOT FUN, and BEDROOM SUCK(home to Boston’s own Fat History Month) over the last decade. And though much of the band’s output catered to only the most fearless of listeners, sounding often like that which was not looking to be found by anyone in Australia or elsewhere, they garnered a dedicated following. Here with this new 7″ on NEGATIVE GUEST LIST their pop feelings are on full display perhaps more than ever before. The 7″ features two songs, but the stunner is “Falling Down the Stairs.” This is classic sounding jangle indie-pop that can be likened to some of the various Australian strands of that genre, or some of its other worldy strands. Whatever you like. And if you like that kind of scene you’ll like this song with its wobbly, chiming guitars, memorable chorus, awesome and weird harmonic hooks, all buoyed by bouncy bass and sympathetic organ. I understand that an album on SILTBREEZE is forthcoming, and if they are continuing to follow this path they have been on, then everybody’s going to humming these jams come summertime.
