LEATHER – EASY

by

Philadelphia’s mighty Leather have finally graced us with their debut LP after a period of inactivity, and it is more than worth the wait. Easy is a fuzzed-out, heavy forward-thinking hardcore record with a lot going on under the surface and some non-hardcore influences to keep things interesting. Leather’s foundation is classic 80’s hardcore with some understated melodies that poke through and tie things together, something like Faith’s Subject to Change or Articles of Faith. But at other moments Leather rocks grungey noise riffs in the mode of early Nirvana, Melvins, or The Jesus Lizard or adds in menacing reverb-y post-punk sounds, reminding me of Die Kreuzen or Naked Raygun’s darker moments. My favorites are the long, swirling “Sinecure” and the furious “Expat,” but you can’t go wrong with any of these songs, as this LP has some truly compelling songwriting. If you’re a fan of stuff like NASA Space Universe, The Coltranes, No, Brown Sugar, or Pissed Jeans then you need to hear these guys. There’s no physical release yet, but be sure to stream and download this LP from their bandcamp.
