THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW – “We Are The Champion”

by

Straight up for my money there hasn’t been a better garage pop band on the planet over the last decade than THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW. Those two guys complete each other. Really. I don’t like either of their other projects (though the THE DING DONGS are pretty great) even half as much as I like the original, true meaning of rock n’ roll duo of THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW. With a consistency that borders on lunacy these two have released record after record full of choice, scuzzy lo-fi RnB/ early-soul infused garage rocking, hook addled good time nuggets. I clearly think these guys are the best. And they would probably slap my ass, and push me (while the other got down on his hands and knees behind me so as to trip me once pushed) to the ground for saying so. But fuck it. It does not get real-er. No one else that I know about is paying homage & turning to rock n’ roll/ late RnB/ early-soul for inspiration, and then forging their own original tunes from such inspiration and getting the whole goddamn thing so right that hundreds and hundreds of people in all kinds of cities across the globe wild out whenever they play their ridiculously infectious spit in your eye hip shakers. I mean who do we have here in Boston, fucking ELI “PAPERBOY” REED (don’t watch the hyperlinked video if you vomit easily, but if vomit is your thing… then have at it!)? Keeping a flame lit, even if they don’t care about something like that. They probably do care. I’d love to see these guys’ record collections, and I’ve always wanted to get them to DJ a dance party… but I digress. So, apparently THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW is changing its name to BAD NEWS BOYS. Uh-huh. So that’s just like the time that THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW broke up forever right? Whatever they are called we can be thankful that Mark Sultan and King Khan are together again and making music while they are. 3 LPs and a bunch of 7″s in, this sassy pair now gives to us a new video for the song “We Are the Champion.” Definitely mild by their standards, the song still manages to be a pretty pleasant pop number. The video part of this bargain illuminates the pitfalls of not being homeless in general lo-to-mid-fidelity. Is this song off the band’s upcoming IN THE RED RECORDS release slated for 2015? Probably, but who knows? And I didn’t even realize until just a moment ago, but the band is playing in Boston soon (9/28), over @ the Live Nation fueled Paradise Rock Club (don’t get it confused with the Paradise gay bar in Cambridge… unless you want to!). No matter where you see them it’s going to be fun (even if the beers are $7). Long live THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW, one of the few things you can depend on in 2014.
