Kindling – No Generation

by

Even if it doesn’t feel like summer yet Kindling’s No Generation will have you thinking it is. Sweet dense waves of sound fill this ep catching listeners in a warm ethereal fuzz that never loosens its hold.

Recorded at the same time as last year’s excellent Everywhere Else the band describes these songs as “poppier, more Ramonesy songs” and that’s pretty accurate. Whereas songs from EE could be less straight forward everything here seems to quickly breeze by, almost too quickly.(The only real downside to this record.)

Energetic is not a word commonly associated with shoegaze, but that’s one of the hallmarks that makes Kindling so striking. It’s a refreshing change to hear a band doing this kind of music sound so live and could be related to their past (half of the members were in the screamo band Ampere). At times the band are reminiscent of MBV as on the hazy coda as song (_____) while others come on in a sugary Dino Jr rush (“Claims Nonexistence” and “Sunspots”). Beautiful obscured vocals hover throughout the mix acting more as another instrument and the occasional intelligible lyric.

The best part about No Generation is its abundance of ideas packed into their thick blurry sound where you can keep finding new things the more you listen. This should be your next soundtrack to the beach.
