No Joy released their stellar second LP Wait to Pleasure earlier in 2013 and have swiftly followed up that dreamy triumph with the excellent and more heady Pastel and Pass Out EP out on Mexican Summer. “Last Boss” shows the Montreal-based band exploring new sonic terrain, embracing the nuanced sequenced rhythms they introduced in Pleasure, but taking their songcraft to more krautrock-like destinations. The track is almost schizophrenic in its shifts from stuttering motorik intro to pummeling shoegaze midsection to the dreamy, soothing conclusion. It’s intriguingly disorienting and heavenly in equal measure, a true hallmark of dream-pop excellence.
