JJ Doll’s coming at you with their Katorga Works released 7” follow-up to their gone-too-soon demo. Birthed from the late Ivy, JJ Doll improves upon that band’s weirdo approach to 80s USHC. This EP finds the band honing their distorted, lightly thrashy brand of punk centered around the guitar hooks of Shiva, mastermind behind sibling experimental punk band Kaleidoscope as well as the late Deformity. The vocals further sell JJ Doll, calling to mind late era no wave bands like UT; they add a spasticness that contrasts with, and compliments, the guitar riffing. As a result, the music is chaotic and all-over-the-place without falling into subgenre pastiche or sampling of a lot of bands invoking off-kilter 80s sounds. JJ Doll is one of the freshest and most exciting bands coming out of New York right now. Keep your eyes peeled for more from JJ Doll, and Kaleidoscope, at D4MTLABSinc.
