Jake Meginsky — “Rabbit Devours the Luna Moth”

by

Jake Meginsky‘s work on his most recent album Vandals cannot be reduced to “songs,” but instead the work is a constantly undulating stream of consciousness that envelopes the listener in his signature bass-heavy sonic environments. Evidently drawing from his time apprenticed to avant-jazz drummer Milford Graves and his experience with West African djun djun and djembe styles; “Rabbit Devours the Luna Moth” is built on a pointillistic rhythm not unlike a heart murmur and a hypnotic pace that has a direct line to one’s urge to bounce uncontrollably. (It’s so hypnotic, in fact, I must pause the song to write about it).

The beat is crowded, but not overwhelming. For example, at first listen the only defining characteristics would be the punching bass and the grasshopper—like—bleep—bloops both in full, lightning speed, conversation with each other. After the first walk through of the environment, more voices become present in the conversation and the seeming silences between beats become fuller and fuller with a chorus of sonic passerby. Meginsky creates a sonic path that invites you to keep walking down in a transfixed procession, however, to complete the ritual I recommend clearing a space maybe 10’x10′ at least, and listening to this through a pair of loud speakers, preferably at ground vibrating volume.

“Rabbit Devours the Luna Moth” is streaming below, and the entire album, Vandals, is out on Open Mouth Records.
