JACUZZI BOYS — S/T

by

There are certain things in life that you know you’ll pretty much always like, regardless of the variation. Mac ‘n Cheese comes to mind. As do the Jacuzzi Boys. This Miami trio has been keeping garage rock cool (hot? warm with bubble jets?) since ’07, though like many of their garage rock brethren, they’ve evolved quite a bit since the early years. Like 2011’s Glazin’, this latest, self-titled album is a bit more crisp and polished than the band’s early, fuzz-ified material, though it doesn’t feel too restrained. Basically, if you put garage rock in a centrifuge test tube, gave it a spin, and let all of the most integral elements sink to the bottom, the result would be Jacuzzi Boys.

The standout track is most definitely “Double Vision”, which the Boys have so wisely chosen as a single. It’s bouncy and upbeat–the perfect soundtrack for a brisk walk on a nice day– yet somehow sounds more mature than anything we’ve heard from the Jacuzzi Boys before. Oh, and it’s a total earworm. Prepare to have it stuck in your head for at least a day.

Besides their impressive will to always have fun, the one thing that makes the Jacuzzi Boys stand out are Gabriel Acala’s vocals. His voice is breathy and articulate, seemingly more fitting for Britpop or shoegaze than good ole’ fashioned garage rock, but for some reason it really works here.

Jacuzzi Boys comes to us from Hardly Art and can be found in your choice format at your favorite local record store.
