A little bit more of some of the prettiest psychedelic pop going. JACCO GARDNER is releasing a new 7″ on the wonderful TROUBLE IN MIND label (home to Boston’s own DOUG TUTTLE, and CT’s ESTROGEN HIGHS). I caught this Dutch conjurer of beautiful, and lush orchestral psychedelic songs playing with MMOSS in Cambridge a while back and I was instantly taken. The guitar playing is always beautiful in JACCO’s world. And perhaps you’ve heard me mention it before, but I’m a sucker for a good song, and a defender of the art of songwriting. Such is on display with a track from GARDNER’s new 7″. “The End of August” is a simmering psych-pop nugget bathed in melancholy and from the school of the ZOMBIES and their kin. Not an ape, just lots of inspiration, and a heap of mellotron. His sound is kind of like that SUB POP pop rock band sound of the last bunch of years, except glistening more brightly, and rolling along even more gently. Pop, yes, but with a little something more intriguing going on. This new single comes some half a year or so after GARDNER’s wonderful CABINET OF CURIOSITIES full length (also TROUBLE IN MIND, what a label!), which you should immediately run to and place on your turntable if this tune stirs something inside of you.
