Homeshake – Midnight Snack

by

Montreal native and psych pop mastermind Peter Sager has released his newest album under his trusted solo moniker, HOMESHAKEMidnight Snack went on sale back in September. It features lazy “beach” rock riffs similar to his former bandmate Mac Demarco, and melodies somehow similar to the latest Frankie Cosmos synth pop EP Fit Me In. Sager’s music differs from Demarco’s in that it arguably focuses more on deceptively complex instrumentals than out front vocals, but it is clear the two artists have affected each other quite a bit style-wise.

In some sense, Midnight Snack hearkens back to the jangle pop movement of the 80s, with its characteristic DIY lo-fi production and catchy, almost-pop melodies in songs like “Under the Sheets”, all of it with just a bit more of a psychedelic flare. With easy going drum machines and synthesizers creating a hazy atmosphere this album is perfect for taking a late night walk, or maybe taking a nap. Preferably something that doesn’t require a lot of energy; it kind of makes you want to curl up in bed.

The Sinderlyn label is releasing Sager’s music now. His music on this record is about his loneliness during his time away from Montreal, but also his appreciation for the little things. To quote the band’s Sinderlyn bio “the meals prepared by his girlfriend Salina and the simple pleasure of a midnight snack before curling up in bed next to the person you love.”
