Holiday Music – John Wayne Syndrome

by

Like their namesake, Holiday Music is unapologetically catchy. But you’ll want to be listening to this Boston-based indie pop band more than one month out of the year.

Holiday Music starts off their September release, John Wayne Syndrome, with a bang (Get it? Because the track is called “Explode.” Heh.) The track combines everything great about the ‘90s/early 2000s alt-rock and pop. There’s the charming, surfy vibes (think Sugar Ray, but ya know, not a joke like Sugar Ray) and the apathetic and bored sounding vocals that sail over the heavily distorted, driving guitars: nostalgic and pleasant.

The album as a whole packs a punch, but does so in a very subdued way. The sound avoids being too sharp and direct, but isn’t so indistinct that it fades into the background. The hooks, twangy riffs, or little synth and piano lines present in almost every track demand attention. And there’s something weirdly soothing about the heavier sonic undertones that back it all.

One of the stand out tracks on the album (released by Boston’s Super Wimpy Punch, by the way) is undoubtedly “The Energy.” Just as you get comfortable with that floating, dreamy verse, Holiday Music abruptly changes direction with an upbeat and clearly defined chorus. The distinct parts are puzzled together perfectly for a fresh and enticing track. But even that description doesn’t do “The Energy” justice; where words fail, Holiday Music takes your hand to lead through their guitar-driven, scuzzy pop wonderland.
