NYC house producer/DJ GUT NOSE (I’m assuming that’s a pun I don’t get?) promises to unloose a hazy, subterranean b-movie techno-fantasy with this, his debut single, out now on STYLES UPON STYLES. He mostly nails it. Opener Difficult to Escape mixes heavy funk backbeats with mid 80’s horror movie keyboard washes. Like if C.H.U.D had more disco scenes – maybe. Mystic Soul is weirder, more propulsive, a sheet of black rain with sinister figures skittering around in the darkness. The title track is by far the most cinematic, a wallop of unease, part forbidden tribal dance, part midnight stroll through a haunted house. Solid debut that should work nicely as the soundtrack to your next lost weekend.
