GRACE SINGS SLUDGE – “DIFFICULT TO LUV”

by

Like its predecessors, GRACE SINGS SLUDGE’s third set of home recordings, RED LIGHT MUSEUM, is full of sparse yet hauntingly emotional tracks. In DIFFICULT TO LUV, the first song off the new album, GRACE COOPER’s electric, almost jazzy voice whispers out choppy lyrics on top of bare guitar and drums. The music builds throughout the song, yet COOPER’s voice remains the focus.

The video for DIFFICULT TO LUV embraces an unabashedly weird and rather cinematic aesthetic. There’s a distinct mix of glamour and horror as COOPER sips on champagne, jerking her body around and singing out dramatically. On a piano bench, she’s surrounded by a collection of porcelain Siamese cats and one real one too, which COOPER holds onto and cuddles throughout. Drum player DIC STUSSO plays in a dark corner, and then shows up in bed.

As disturbing as it is captivating, DIFFICULT TO LUV encapsulates the eerie beauty of the entire RED LIGHT MUSEUM album.
