Girlpool — “Before the World Was Big”

by

Like the looming ghosts of the Grady twins, Girlpool stands hand in hand “wearing matching dresses,” urging you to come play with them and their latest single, “Before the World Was Big.” The song is the second single released from the Los Angeles guitar and bass duo’s upcoming debut LP.

The playful tone of the track is set from the start, with a few seconds of sound from what must be a childhood musician’s favorite—the toy glockenspiel. Tight rhythmic interplay between bass and guitar directly follow and carry throughout the song. The vocalists play with each other as well, sometimes trading phrases, other times singing in unison, and end by singing in a round. These youthful musical thematics fit well with the lyrical narrative—one that acknowledges how the process of aging brings about both internal and external change. Effectually, the listener is ushered into a space to explore a time “before the world was big,” and maybe when the body was a bit smaller.

The LP is out in the US on June 2 via Wichita Records. Girlpool comes to Cambridge to play at The Sinclair with Waxahatchee and local lo-fi rockers Fleabite on May 13. For more information, visit their website.
