GEOFF MULLEN – WIND CHIMES

by

Indeterminate soundscapes echo off the misplaced speakers clinging to my ears. I am wearing headphones in an effort to focus on Geoff Mullen‘s latest LP, Wind Chimes, but my actions fail the artist’s intent. Mullen has a few suggestions for listening to the record; they include giving it away to friends and imagining what it sounds like as well as turning on the phonograph and walking away, letting the sound mingle with the aural aether.

As performance, Wind Chimes lives up to the Cagean slant of these brief notes. Mullen recorded the entirety of sounds by walking around with some cheap bamboo chimes during the Cicada brood. He lets every possible sounds interfere. All this beckons experimental listening techniques, but really, you can get away with being traditional and letting the album wash over you like any normal record nerd. The music is blissful, shakey, precise, and simple.
