Gay Sin – s/t

by

Did you ever have that perfect chocolate-covered pretzel? The one with the perfect balance of salty and sweet? Gay Sin’s s/t EP is much like that pretzel. The music is perfect harmony of two unlike things—dirty, heavy riffs and delicate (but notably powerful) vocals courtesy of Violet Neff.

The EP begins with the promising pop (but still distinctly rock) tune “I Don’t Know.” It gives you a taste for the direction of the rest of the EP—undeniably catchy and generally irresistible. “Hanging Around” takes a punk turn, with a rapid chord progression and an in-your-face demeanor that, if played in the right environment, is guaranteed to initiate a mosh pit.

“Blizzard of ‘78” continues with the punk attitude as it’s opened with Neff pointedly remarking Fuck off if you think I owe you anything. All the while, the band (composed of Eliot Neff, Laura Brogan, Christine Varriale, and Gen Cayford) roars from behind. In “You Don’t Know,” as well as in on all the tracks of the EP, Gay Sin take the likability of your favorite guitar pop tunes and mesh it with gritty Boston rock. There is also just the right amount of raw emotion, like in “Metal Girl.” Neff sings I am a strong device / I am a metal girl / And I would do most anything for anyone in the world and consequently pulls at your heartstrings a bit. But the music of Gay Sin mends your bleeding heart all the same.

The band closes the EP by chanting “GAY SIN!” at the end of “Anthem,” as if their killer music didn’t remind you of their presence anyway. But why would you even forget them or their songs? Not only is it unbelievably well-executed, but Gay Sin’s music is for everyone. It’s for those who are feeling irritated or in love or angsty. And labeled as a “gender meltdown tape,” it certainly doesn’t put any limits on their audience either. Gay Sin uses their catchy tunes to welcome you into their world of stellar rock with open arms, and you would be smart to accept the invitation.
