FRESH VID: THE CYCLIST

by

Hailing from Derry, Northern Ireland, the Cyclist is a 19 year old producer making some of the wooziest broken dance music around. Following small batch releases on reputable micro-labels Beko_DSL and Crash Symbols, the Cyclist makes a huge splash with his debut full length ‘Bones in Motion’ off the ever-excellent Leaving Records (run by LA wunderkid Matthewdavid). The album is a veritable smorgasborg of driving, bouncy beats that go nowhere in particular – happy instead to linger around a rhythm, circling it like water down the drain. Resounding clangs of dirty percussion crash like pounding waves against crunchy bass lines. Sprawling synth tones expand across a dystopian landscape of discarded sonic refuse, muffled tape warble moans screech through techno trash. ‘Bones in Motion’ demonstrates that the future of dance music is in the noise, as adroit use of distortion keeps these beats feeling messy, sultry, with a mean, serrated edge that cuts through (and contrasts nicely with) its hi-fi glossy sheen. It’s that guttural poignancy, the maddening immediacy that makes this record perfect for those dark all-night dungeon dance parties. Get on it.
