‘Young Republicans’, the new single from Lower Dens off their forthcoming album The Competition, out September 6th via Ribbon Music, is a surrealistic wallop. While this single follows close on the heels of their last release, 2015’s Escape from Evil, the song maintains the difficulty with which these underground icons carry forth their legacy. Main members, Jana Hunter and Nate Nelson cloak contemporary social unease in glistening, irrestible dance-pop for both the listeners ecstasy and philosophical provocation.
This is an interesting choice for a single from a band that is constantly full of surprises. The song, representative of their catalogue, is able to cover large swathes of the emotional spectrum with urgency and necessity, but also with grace and care. I personally cannot wait for this record to come out to hear what Lower Dens have been up to since their last release.
