FRESH VID: LIGHT YEAR – MODERATION

by

Moderation, the latest from Australian DJ/producer Jordan Fellers aka LIGHT YEAR, has been percolating on the interweb for the better part of the past year, but decidely fresh and ripe for dance-floor consumption. After being inundated for several years with UK dupstep, hazy ambient-pop ‘post-dubstep, and vacuous sub-womp overkill of brostep, its important to look back a simpler time in modern EDM history, like around 2007, when Justice and Ed Banger crew captured hearts and french filter-house held sway. Those image-obsessed cats unfortunately choked on their own cool and got stale quick, but the zeitgeist energy they carried never goes out of style. LIGHT YEAR pick up where they left off, channeling that vaguely ominious yet insidulously seductive sub-bass groove. With so many layers of warped percussive claps and gritty slinking synth basslines, this track deftly grips you by your cerebellum and leads you along an endorphin-fueled skyward ride to ecstatic mutant-house heights. The trick is, unlike so many bedroom throw-aways, Light Year’s artfully-crafted tunes never overplay their hand, maintaining just enough dramatic restraint to keep the build from sounding vacuous or boring. You can get their new EP from Bang Gang on Beatport, and let’s hope for a visit soon.
