Phenomenal Highways, his newest LP for White Denim, contains blistering, brain-numbing synth assaults that have a hypnotic momentum and build. Our first taste of the album comes in the form of “Black Candles and Ritual Metal.” Here, Mentor shows just how much you can do with the extreme pulse of a single, monotonous synth note. “Black Candles” looks for the drama in the details and emerges smoldering, ragged, and beautiful.
