In the liner notes to their 1995 compilation “Permanent,” Joy Division wrote that they sought to find “indescribable beauty in absolute ugliness.” “Mob Reality,” the new 7″ by Sydney’s no-wave inspired Whores, updates the cavernous drone of English post-punk and paints it fresh with a noisy sheen of driving, minimalist riffs that twist and churn their way across walls of whining feedback. Aggressively bellowed vocals and scattered drums all add to the haunting quality of “Mob Reality,” brining to mind Lydia Lynch among other contributors to Brian Eno’s “No New York.” Similar to Swans, Whores do an excellent job pulling the listener head first into a world filled with jagged hooks that proves strangely inviting.
