SOFT HEALER

by

Soft Healer - ep (monofonus press 2013)It’s been a couple years since we’ve heard much from Austin’s SOFT HEALERapparently they’ve been busy with grad school and babies – but fortunately they’re back to it with a new EP from Monofonus Records. The group’s sound is slow-burn psychedelic blues; languid wah-wah guitar riffs and playful organ keys swirl down the drain of minimal pounding back beat. Touches of tom tom and cymbal accent melodious moans and cries. This EP demonstrates Soft Healer’s dynamism and range, as they shift smoothly from scorched peyote drones to gruff western ballads and back down to mellow blues grooves. Soft, haunting sounds that wail and clatter in the background add to the expansive, ominous feeling that creeps under your skin. The tracks are stark and unsettling, yet so seductively groovy – like the dark camp of late 60’s vampire italo-porno. They’ll be touring the Northeast and Midwest throughout August, with a full length to come hopefully by fall. Until then, we’ll have to settle for these gems. The EP is out July 9th, but you can preorder it now if you’d like.
