Bitter, squelching avant-brutality from these NYC veterans. A gluey blues, “Better Fastened”(from their new LP, “Terribly Well”) lurches along with an uneasy and increasingly paranoid tip-toe. Sightings have always blended pure, pummeling volume worship with a craftsman like infusion of out-jazz, and “Better Fastened” is a true trojan horse in that regard, not surprisingly. The drums stay steady, but the bass playing is positively anxious- unleashed with well commanded abandon, and adding ably to the queasy vibe.
Sightings are on tour in Europe all month. Let’s hope we get a a face full when they get back, as Sightings are not to be missed live.
