PARQUET COURTS

by

Just learned that I just missed these guys when they were here last week, and that apparently they didn’t even get to play…wish I had known about the show (hey, Tufts kids, let us know ok?!). Anyway, PARQUET COURTS. A Brooklyn band, mining power pop and the poppy end of post-punk, they do it right and have songs that I want to return to. Working in the same realm as EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING and WOUNDED LION and the like the guitar chimes and works in circular riff filled patterns as the singer yelps along, endearing and full of energy. LIGHT UP GOLD came out a few months ago on DULL TOOLS and it’s 15 songs deep, teetering on that post-punk/proto-punk line that I never seem to get bored of when done right. These guys spice it up from time to time with strange effects and the stray guitar solo, but mostly it’s a punk rock approach. “Yonder Is Closer To The Heart” is a driving minimal proto-punk blast, the vocals coming in a constant stream pushing the song quickly through its just under 3 minutes.
