The new NIGHT BIRDS album finally dropped yesterday, which I wasn’t all that excited about until I actually listened to it. I’ve heard bits and pieces of stuff from these guys and it’s never really grabbed my attention for some reason (although you can bet your ass I’ll be giving all of it another listen now.) I was even a bit apprehensive after listening to the first track, entirely instrumental with no lack of guitar riffs, not totally my thing…HOWEVER, not even 30 seconds into the title track “Born to Die in Suburbia”, I was totally fucking sold. I feel like most of this record fits right in with the kind of punk a lot of us probably liked in high school but with a whole lot more originality. The rest of it drifts towards feeling a little surfy, but with a lot more grit than other surf influenced bands we’ve been hearing from these days. If I had to pick a favorite song, I’d go with “Modern Morons”. This is the kind of album that I know will grow on me more and more with each listen, and I can’t wait to see them play at O’Briens on July 27th. (Night Birds, Red Dons, White Pages, No Sir I Won’t!, Funeral Cone).
