MUTWAWA make some of the coolest weird and directly to the point beat music I have heard in a long while. If not already the case I can see these guys getting hooked up with some strange rap fellows and making some serious magic happen. These are buzzing, blipping dance floor directed electronic nuggets made by a duo in Richmond, VA. There are samples and fat bass lines, and digressions into noisier territory, and the beats are taken from across the spectrum. On “Initiation Of The Portal” a bongo loop starts us up and then the samples and weird synth riffs start piling up. The track is only 2 and a 1/2 minutes long, but it could have gone on for ten, and I was wishing that it did when I played this near the end of the last Boston Hassle monthly night. Because people, they were freaking out! “Sitsoi You” is wrapped all around a South Asian flute sample, and it really burns along with some buzzing bass, and well placed samples all over a stuttering dance beat. This is well crafted beat music. I would love to see them give a stab at longer form compositions. This tape, LAMASHTU PAZUZU, came out last year on C.N.P. RECORDS, and there’s been a new one since, so maybe they’ve even gone there already. I’ll let you know once I have a listen.
