As the singer and songwriter of THE BEETS, JUAN WAUTERS has given rise to some of the most memorable, and fantastic shambling pop songs of the last decade. His band is three great albums and some 7″s into it, and so far so good as their shuffling beat and bouncing pop delivery of strange, insightful, and surreal lyrics has hardened into an instantly recognizable approach with admirers near and far. We’ve been admirers for quite some time here @ the HASSLE, having even put on a show some years ago for THE BEETS at our late lamented warehouse space THE COTTAGE. And now Juan is trying the solo thing for a little while, at least until the next record by his band wanders out into the public. A single by Juan has appeared called the SANITY 7″ and it’s out on WAYWARD RECORDS. The title track is 2 minutes long and it’s a near instant classic, skyward looking melodies bouncing all around, right off of the simple acoustic guitar/bass/barely there drums. It sounds like THE BEETS! And why shouldn’t it. I love this guys songs. It’s looking like we may be putting on a show for Juan in april. Eyes PEELED.
