Welcome the return of HIGH WOLF, that intergalatic shaman keeping France bizarre. Since 2009, this intrepid psycho-sonic traveler has honed his musical process, forming intricately layered compositions through deep improvised jams. His latest LP, KAIROS:CHRONOS, from the inestimable NOT NOT FUN, is perhaps his most mature, polished release yet. The tribal polyrhythms that comprise High Wolf’s signature sound proliferate in the humid heat like so many vividly painted fishes swimming in the undulating electric current of clattering percussion and humid, pulsating wah-wah riffs. His songs build upon themselves, growing with each layer into a swelling mass of Fripp-ish textures that rise and fall in shifting cycle of creation and destruction. At times driven and purposeful, at others drifting and lacksadaisical, High Wolf’s songs always carry you along, confidently wandering through this cosmic warmhole towards a tropical astral plane. This is groove-based music at its finest – it compels you to relax and disengage from pointless thought patterns, leading you towards that elusive green flash out on the pacific horizon. Grab his new record HERE, and look out for a US tour this fall.
