Mr. Dean Blunt has followed up his detached disc of pseudo-pop The Narcissist II with another, twisted take on late millennial solo music. On The Redeemer, Blunt sheds most of the lo-fi warble that has characterized his earlier work with Inga Copeland in Hype Williams. Now, like Copeland, Blunt has moved towards sharper but no less warped take on pop music. With higher fidelity and cleaner production, The Redeemer sounds alternately more playful or sinister from track to track. “Papi” contains some of the most beautiful instrumentation on the disc, with a warped soul sample (?) repeating, ascending, and creeping behind a broken-hearted Blunt warbling incantations to a much-needed lover – “You bring out the best in me,” he repeats. His voice is upfront in the mix, and as soon as the synths build underneath, a lilting piano bit takes the song out underneath voices shouting the countdown.
