(5/9) STOP MAKING SENSE (1984) DIR. JONATHAN DEMME @SOMERVILLE

by

Do you like fun? No, really, do you?

I’m serious. Because if you do – if you really, really do – then you won’t miss tonight’s screening of STOP MAKING SENSE. This is the live concert/dance party you’ve been waiting for and it’s 99 minutes of pure joy.

Drawing its name from the song “Girlfriend is Better”, STOP MAKING SENSE is Jonathan Demme’s recording of the Talking Heads. Not only that, it’s the first full-length documentary that Demme (the man who brought us SILENCE OF THE LAMBS!) made and it is still lauded today as one of the greatest rock movies of all time.

The best part is that you simply can’t watch this movie and not want to boogie. If you go you’ll be singing and wiggling till the sun comes up. From seeing coked-out, master of performance David Byrne walk out on stage with a boom box for a solo rendition of “Psycho Killer”, other band members and instruments gradually joining him onstage, to my favorite performance of the perfect “Crosseyed and Painless”.

Ugh, it might be Friday morning and the energy at work is low, but bless you David Byrne — you’ve got me bouncing at my desk.
