Boston duo Sweet Petunia released their third EP, Lovingly, this past November and it speaks to the nature of traversing love’s spectrum: recognizing the presence of love that is hidden in plain sight in the mundane of daily life.
From the start, the band’s conception was one born from connectedness. Madison Simpson and Mariead Guy first met while playing music in college. While waiting for a classmate who hadn’t shown for rehearsal, Simpson and Guy connected over musical goals and aspirations, forming a kinship that reverberates through every chord and lyric today. These words are poetic expressions that touch on all types of relationships-platonic, romantic, familial- and the relation to self and others through individual queer experiences. “Sweet Petunia was a nickname my great grandfather called his grandchildren. After years of holding on to this name, I finally met Maddy, and we decided it fit our sound perfectly,” said Mariead.
Sweet Petunia has collaborated with local Boston artists Grace Givertz, Dino Gala, and Paper Lady and will be starting post-production on their first full length album in December. Who’s driving down this road at four a.m.
Why is anybody else awake this time of day
Are they worried just like me
About reality
Is their heartbeat in their stomach
Just like mine
Who’s driving down this road at four a.m.
Do they know they need to get their engine checked
Do they hear birds chirp amen
As the morning light breathes in again
Casting sunshine on these faded
Postered walls
All I wanna do is fall asleep
But here I am wondering if you’re awake thinking of me
My phone’s dead
I’m tucked into a friend’s spare bed
As the June air blows in and out
Out of my head
All I wanna do is fall asleep
But here I am wondering if you’re awake thinking of me
My phone’s dead
I’m tucked into a friend’s spare bed
As the June air blows in and out
In and out
Out of my head
Who’s driving down this road at four a.m.
Maybe I could maybe I could maybe I could hitch a ride with them
Will your arms be flung open wide
For me to curl up inside
Will the air be still my heart beat fast the air be still my heart beat fast
Again
