En Kernaghan Band – Divine Body Care 7″

by

Ethan Kernaghan of the En Kernaghan Band shares characteristics with the Nashville DIY legend R Stevie Moore: lo-fi pop fuzz, Beatles-era psychedelia, and an affinity for crunchy guitar riffs. Ethan and Stevie see through social constructs that only serve to restrict our personal growth and health. But Ethan distinguishes himself from from others in DIY with his Divine Body Care 7”.

The A-side is heavy on a spiritual tip. “Divine body care gives you long life,” is repeated and panned like a hymn of call and response, as if Ethan is giving a mission statement for his body of music. His voice is thick with fuzz, adding to the haze of noise made by the sitar-like drones. The percussion slaps in and out of the song’s sludgy tapestry as Ethan gives a positive view on The Big Questions of Life and wishes, “may you live long.” The B-side “Things Are Constantly Changing” is less religious in sound and lyrics. This track is more playful than “Divine Body Care,” and focuses on the micro affecting the macro. Lines like, “When I was a child I didn’t like getting spanked / Now I like getting spanked,” dial back the solemnity that the A-side may have built up. The 7” balances the energy of rock and the dignity spirituality without feeling corny or forced. Check it out on Ever/Never Records:
