In her 6-song EP Soft Stuff, Emily Yacina builds a fascinating persona through her delicate music. Her whispering moans and ethereal chord progressions are prominent throughout the album. In the realm of dream pop, Yacina’s music sounds like waking up from a weed nap that turned into a full night’s sleep.
“Funky Girl” is the only song that deviates from the somber daydream-y aesthetic, and even starts to sound similar to Jessica Lea Mayfield. It is the most upbeat of the songs, but remains true to the hazy, lo-fi style characteristic of Yacina’s persona.
The album was released in December, following steady releases since 2011. Over time her music has moved from indie singer/songwriter to this very purposeful, but not quite refined dream pop style. Soft Stuff is wonderful, and definitely Yacina’s best album yet. Next time you roll a joint, you should know what music to listen to.
