Elephants – Endless Arcade

by

Something about early 2000’s pop was so undeniably catchy. It combined distorted, riffing guitars with the sweet, fun nature of bubblegum pop, creating the nostalgic soundtrack to every millennial’s youth. It may have seemed that the genre was isolated in the past and rather long-gone, but Boston’s power pop band, Elephants, brings the sound back while offering their own fresh twist in their latest EP, Endless Arcade.

In the intro track, “Goodbye, Breakup Diner,” Elephants not only dredge up a seemingly bygone sound, but also a broken relationship’s past set in a diner. (Diners just have an inherent quality that make them an ideal place to dwell on love and loss, no?) Though the subject matter is perhaps a bummer, the song itself is a pick-me-up. It channels the energy of a bad day and transforms it into an explosive and catchy song that lets you know that, hey, it’ll be all good.

The high energy continues throughout the EP’s next four tracks. The sound remains aggressive and loud, but it’s balanced by softer vocals that have just enough of a kick to coincide perfectly. The closing track, “See You,” flawlessly exemplifies this cohesive duality while also reminding you that rock music can pull at the heartstrings, too.

Endless Arcade is painfully but charmingly relatable, melodic yet forceful, and nostalgically familiar, but still exceptionally refreshing. The result? A timeless, power-packed EP that you’ll have on repeat for years to come.
