To See: Recent Works by the AgX Film Collective

6/30 @CCTV

by

This Thursday at 7:00pm, Cambridge Community Television welcomes members of the AgX Film Collective in Waltham to present nine short films and videos they’ve made over the past few years. And both orgs. want to welcome you to this free, all ages event! These works are unusual and exciting. They will excite you and hopefully challenge you. They are not connected with one another by a narrow theme or style, but you could say that they are all experimental films…experimental in the sense that each of them distorts one or more aspects of the traditional filmmaking process to stimulate the eyes, ears, and the emotional mind through unconventional means.

Two-thirds of the pieces in this program were originally shot on 16 or 8mm film. Film is not inherently better than video or vice versa, but the practice of making movies on film is significant to AgX as a collective of motion picture artists. One of the principle goals underlying their formation just over a year ago was to consolidate a scattered population of independent filmmakers who tend to prefer the aesthetic and material workability of celluloid film to digital video making. Many of the projects to be seen on Thursday night reflect this common appreciation of the unpredictable, imperfect qualities presented in physical film stock.

What then will you see at this screening? A trance film of torrential rain; a visual ‘Analysis of Pleasure’; an Argentine political poetry performance; a tumble with camera in hand; Richard Pryor and his wisdom re-imagined in flickering light; and more. So come to Cambridge’s hub of public-access media and take part in a burgeoning local community of independent/experimental film-makers and -watchers. And if still images suit you more, CCTV is hosting an opening gallery reception of digital photography at 6:00pm just before the screening.
