Allas Sak, released on Mexican Summer, is the latest album from Swedish psych pop masters Dungen. The first album since the band’s 2010 Skit I Allt finds their sounds at its least prog while maintaining the concise and singular sound they have crafted over the last 15 years. While Allas Sak maybe be the band’s most concentratedly poppy, it also demonstrates their most diverse instrumentation emphasizing more than ever the rigorous control that makes Dungen stand above their peers. The jazzy “Franks Kaktus” centers around a flute solo before a 60s psychedelic by way of raga guitar grows and vies for control. The blend of bass, tenor sax, and piano on “Akt Dik,” on the other hand, borders on lounge music in its hazy psychedelic ease. While the album may not reach the high points of 2004’s Ta Det Lungt, Dungen’s songwriting grows ever more inscrutable. Allas Sak is an album by a band who has long since solidified their sound and has aged it to near perfection.
