When I first heard Nicky Romance’s new EP, “Nug Life”, in an upstate New York train station, I was the fader on a metaphorical DJ’s turntable, being jolted back and forth between mean muggin’ everybody in sight and fighting urges to get up and dance like a baboon. The album opens with a GANGSTA banger, skipping hi hats reminiscent of old 36mafia jams and rhythmic looped samples come in and out of focus, leaving predictable beat hop in the dust. Just when you think you’re being taken on a long ride through the hood, he heaves you overseas with “creepycrawlyz”, a fist pumping europop jam that sounds like something daft punk was playing in sweaty basements in the days of yore (makes you wonder how long before Nicky is selling out clubs). Not everyday do you hear a dance album with this much variety in style influence. These recordings, an the according live performance, are sure to leave you blunt-in-mouth, leaned back, and ringin’ the sweat out of your shirt all at the same time.Get it for free on his bandcamp.
