Don Howland — “Gonna Shake It (Until It Dies)”

by

You know, the difference between sneering, bratty punk and embittered old man is surprisingly subtle. It’s especially so in Don Howland’s punk-blues-but-mostly-punk track “Gonna Shake It (Until It Dies)”. Howland’s guitar whines as he moans, “This fuckin’ noise, I cannot take it… I’m gonna shake it, I’m gonna shake it, until it dies.” What’s gotten this underground rock veteran so pissed off is not entirely clear, though the song’s repetitive chorus is weirdly allusive to another song about shaking it that came out not so long ago. Could modern pop music be the source of Don Howland’s rage?

“Gonna Shake It” comes from Howland’s Life is a Nightmare via 12XU Records. Stream the song below, and while you’re at it, check out some of his work with formative punk groups like The Bassholes and Gibson Brothers.
