Deadbeat Club – Deadbeat Club EP

by

I’m going to go out on a limb and say Northampton, MA’s DEADBEAT CLUB is named after the best B-52’s song. But where the B-52’s song is a fun jaunt full of reminisces about their early days in Athens, GA, our DEADBEAT CLUB ‘s lyrics are more of the ominous, spooky variety. In one case, on the song “Elyria,” literally chanting a black magic hex at you. If anything should happen to me after writing this review, you, dear Hassle reader, know who is responsible.

Possible cursing aside, DEADBEAT CLUB’s self-titled EP is three songs of evil post-punk or, as they dub themselves, “witch punk.” A little SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES here, a little THE BIRTHDAY PARTY there. If you really want a B-52’s reference, think more “Planet Claire” than “Love Shack.” Whether you’re a proper, cemetery haunting goth or just want something to play at your Halloween party after “Monster Mash,” DEADBEAT CLUB is sure to satisfy all of your sinister desires. Available on (perhaps haunted?) cassette from Mirror Universe Tapes.

Deadbeat Club play a Hassle show on monday 10/24!!!
