“When I learned Your Name” is the kind of addictive song that would make Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe smile.
Over the years Daniel Romano has shape-shifted his career never staying in one genre too long but his latest as new wave power popster might be his best. Filled with handclaps and an insistent guitar hook he flips around the sleazy sentiment of creeping on a younger woman with the sweeter notion of waiting for the right one. Lines like ”You were only a girl so i waited until, Maggie you grew into you” seem tailor-made for power pop and hit just the right spot with a warmth and familiarity that avoids being/without being too saccharine. This along with “Roya” are only a preview of his new album “Modern Pressures” (out on May 19th) but if the rest is even half as good as this, it will be a monster.
