The Coltranes have been tearing it up for a couple years now, with a slew of 12”s showing off their trademark sound, something like Danzig fronting Brainbombs. Cat Of Nine Tails is an upcoming EP on the almighty SPHC – seriously one of the best punk labels going. The vocals on this release are a bit gruffer and the overall sound reminds me a bit more of the weirder 80s Bay Area stuff a la Subterranean Records or Fang. “Parallels,” which may be the best track this band has recorded so far, has an almost deathrock sound, like a more frenzied Mighty Sphincter at their most hardcore. Some of the riffs on this EP sound like they could have come from 86 Mentality – high praise, indeed. While they’ve been producing essential records, this is probably the best record The Coltranes have recorded so far, so keep your eyes peeled and grab some other SPHC classics while you’re at it.
