Circuit Des Yeux is Haley Fohr. Her rich, powerful baritone is unlike any you are likely to hear from another woman working in independent music today. Five albums in, it’s a restrained and tender instrument which anchors her lilting, aching folk sensibility in something almost mystical.

Her latest record, In Plain Speech, is out now on Thrill Jockey, and it’s on that LP that you’ll find this song, “Fantasize the Scene.” The song starts with stark, downbeat chord progressions and fingerpicked guitar, and ends with some sweetly melancholy string arrangements.

But as incongruous as the occasionally silly imagery and the brooding folk music may appear, the video, directed by Julia Dratel, actually fits the message of the music wonderfully. It’s an uplifting meditation on how even the briefest physical encounters can create friendships and connections which last an eternity. It’s a little sentimental, but tempered by Fohr’s otherworldly, almost Nicoesque vocals. A bittersweet treat that may or may not hit you in the feels.
