Chimes is a four-piece shoegaze band from Brooklyn (or New Jersey?) who incorporate elements of pop, punk, and psychedelic rock. The 2-song digital single Psychic Shack is a solid demonstration of the band. “Total Sunflower” features a fairly standard 21st century loudquietloud shoegaze track with spoken vocals that falls along the lines of bands like A Place To Bury Strangers and other less Slumberland-influenced acts, before the droning psych of the song takes over. “Rinso” is a huge step up, with ethereal vocals and lush heavy psych guitar washes raining down. The song expands and pushes forward Chimes’ sound into something bigger and more their own. Live, the high energy of the performance belies the shoegaze sound. At the same time, inklings of post-rock in their songs come to fruition, growing through the poppy psych cacophony. The band has recently concluded a small tour and may or may not have any physical releases in the works.
