CHECK IT: LEWIS M.

by

LEWIS MORRIS THA ILLEST FOR REAL
When the hell did rap music get so complex? Beats these days have grown into mammoth compositions that swallow up any attempt at lyricism; it’s like the rap is the backing track, even if it hasn’t been autotuned into the squeal of a preteen WALL-E. LEWIS M., the secretive local MC and poet, is looking to change that with his mellow, sparse and laid-back tracks that bloom like algae into sunny back-porch jams rife with thought-out rhymes and a heavy backbeat swing. His raps aren’t of the boastful Kanye variety and instead are humbling and self-reflective, spit to release a feeling rather than play with words. The majority of his music is published without the rhymes, allowing you to sip your drank slow while his tasteful and unhampered beats carry you away to a less humid place full of old-skool soul and uptempo jazz sliced finer than Miami’s finest blow. Back in May he released a single, DOG., as he gets ready to drop his debut full-length any day now. Last night he opened up for a gaggle of lo-fi weirdo rawk nerds including THE GURU, HIGH POP, HIYA DUNES and others over at Thieves’ Grotto in Allston, but if you missed it then keep your ear to the ground for the release of his E.P., and check the Bandcamp for now. Keep the rhymes flowin’ and the grooves real slowin’.
