CHECK IT: DEBO BAND

by

It might be easier to write a review of Debo Band in Amharic than it is to express the importance of this band properly here in the Hassle. Amharic, of course, is the language that most of their songs are in, as the JP-based ensemble has been building their songs off a shared love of the music from Ethiopia’s Golden Age since their inception in 2006. This album has been released by Sub Pop’s new imprint Next Ambiance, just the sort of opportunity that gives every other local band hope to keep blowing eardrums in local basements. The band mixes some traditional Ethiopian tunes with their own compositions, and each of the members bring their own spirit to these songs allowing them to open up and cross all the boundaries between rock and funk and jazz and noise. Debo Band is the sound of a party, and there is nothing we at the Hassle like better than a good party, and this one is the best and it’s ours.
