From sunny San Diego AUTHOR & PUNISHER’s one man electronic destruction of the senses comes. Blackened electronics, that at times almost become some sort of twisted, throbbing dance music (what with the bulldozer bass and general circular rythmic thud), fill this new record from AUTHOR & PUNISHER, URSUS AMERICANUS. When the bass is less than in your face the sound takes on an industrial bent which makes so much sense when you learn of what these sounds are made from. The man behind this project, Tristan Shone, builds his own sculpture-like sound machines which he utilizes in live performance to make the devastating sounds you can hear below. Electronic music with serious physical interaction. I haven’t yet seen this spectacle live, but check out the video below to get an idea of how cool this whole scenario is. Choice cut off the record for my money is the opener “Terrorbird”, a lurching, growl filled bass explosion of a track. Fuzz swirls, and drums plod, the whole thing flowing like molasses over you making it impossible not to sway. That is, unless you’ve run away from these sounds upon first hearing them. There’s a serious headbanging element to this. Really weird stuff, and Tristan “seems” so “normal” in the video below. Later on in the record things do mellow a little here and there in a mysterious sci-fi kind of way. Totally original approach I must say. Put this on and go straight to hell.
