Wanna listen to a record like a cup of coffee brings me up makes me shit & hear a band from across the skatepark– is it raining? Can’t tell or can’t remember either way I dunno– under the overpass in the half van & turn it way up cause if you can’t hear what I’m saying close the window don’t turn down the music which at first pissed me way off cause fuck you it’s hot & stuffy in this van & of course I’m hungover & but Hattiesburg Mississippi is great this time of year & a hotel party is the pinnacle of rock & roll decadence I will trade my well being (if not my $$ because part of what is important is that “someone else” is paying for it, preferably “someone” in the citizens united sense cus, let’s be real, if you got that $$ you oughtta be covering hotel bills left & right for southern punk bands & freaks with teeth, but even if its coming from home you can still up the rock n roll by cramming & sneaking & smoking inside but only a couple cus it’s hot & stuffy in this room & of course I’m hungover but New Orleans is great this time of year & Casual Burn is hot & mean like a brand new band without the guff & with all the quick wrists & flick waists & shake shake shake like forever on the strings.
It probably was raining- at least during their set like on Truman on the beach like YOU ARE THE ONE TRUMAN IT’S BEEN LEADING To this moment ALL ALONG. Slouching punk rock is next only to country music in my holy trinity of things to check out right now because I’m sick of being tricked by the next big disco & my own ignorance about what has or hasn’t been done before because its starting to seem like everything has so how bout just doing it right? Ok ok ok you know all the chords & have the whole deal about switching from one to another down (holy shit never would I ever have figured in a Friends quote but just the other day mush tells me he likes it & all I do is laugh like an ass & oink like- well hell I don’t need to say what oinks do I? Nobody’s that stupid…) now play it like you mean it because there is nothing worse than a bored band which not coincidentally is next only to evil in my holy trinity of things to avoid right now. & is that it? Learn how to hold it & play it like you mean it not just rock & roll but country & blues & hip hop & jazz cause maybe it’s all jazz david said anytime you’re playing music in America you’re playing jazz even playing jazz which is a brand new idea but makes plenty of sense if you wanna look at rock & roll as attitude like I do & did high on the hill yelling & embarrassing my future self seeing Jason Lee explain “plus the chicks are great” & so then what are you playing? You’re playing jazz talking Dylan spinning records & feeling groovy & there’s honesty, which is for sure crucial, but also there is mystery which is another way of calling lies ok but which is absolutely crucial because there are only so many times I can hear Father John telling his honeybear how much he loves her & literately recounting instances of pretension involving the kids using “literally” in this wild new way of & for which if you remember I could be accused & would have to come up with some defense- write me about it if you’re literately or literally inclined- or go check out Casual Burn or both or neither ya ya.
