Castle Danger – Teenage Cranes EP

by

And maybe it’ll be clear enough weather/for us to stare at the clouds forever. Instead of staring at the clouds like in “Going to a Place,” Castle Danger sends you traveling to an indie dance floor in the clouds with their latest EP, Teenage Cranes.

Reminiscent of early 2000’s Brit-pop, the three songs of the EP jump between minimalism and complexity. Castle Danger expose their songs’ bare bones at some parts with just bass and drums beating along, while in other instances, they substantiate the songs with jangly guitar lines and ever-changing vocal melodies. The sum of the polar parts is an effortlessly bouncy indie-pop energy.

Of the three songs, “Baby, Are You Real?” stands out among the rest. It has a stop-and-start-again intro that grabs your attention immediately before breaking into a dreamy (and somewhat surfy) verse with equally as dreamy vocal harmonies artfully executed by members Soubhik Barari, Will Freeman, and Thomas Colgrove. The chorus is a multifaceted complexity. It begins by launching into a bold segment, which is perhaps the loudest and most straightforward that Castle Danger gets in the EP. They drop the jangly guitar riffs for aggressive chords, but switch gears immediately by crooning tell me, tell me, tell me you’re the real thing. The dynamic structure and sound of “Baby, Are You Real?” make it the true masterpiece of the EP.

The major downfall of Teenage Cranes is that with its release came the demise of Castle Danger. Fortunately, the Medford three-piece left us with a criminally catchy EP to play on repeat for the rest of eternity.
